The history of the Japanese chawan begins with the Tenmoku tea bowl (Jian Zhan or Jian ware), which was introduced between the 9th and 13th centuries and became the first type of chawan to be widely used and revered in Japan.
We are dedicated to Tenmoku chawan, the stunning ceramic art from Fujian’s Jianyang region. Fascinated by its ancient origins in the Song Dynasty, we work directly with artisans to offer source region Jian Zhan teaware to collectors and tea enthusiasts everywhere.

What is Tenmoku Chawan?
Tenmoku Chanwan - Jian Zhan, or Jian Ware, is a famous type of tea cup / bowl that began in Jianyang during the Song Dynasty. Loved for its one-of-a-kind glazes, it was the cup of choice for emperors, scholars, and tea ceremonies.
The secret is in how it’s fired. Made with iron-rich clay and natural glaze, each cup is fired above 1300°C to create unique crystal patterns like:
